We congratulate Shanice on admission and know she will represent Loughlin well this summer!

Shanice Ogaldez (Junior), was accepted into the HIGHLY competitive Weill Cornell Youth Scholars Program (WCYSP) at Weill Cornell - a four week program in July.

The WCYSP embodies the idea that early intervention is critical to shaping a student's future, and therefore seeks to endow students with the skills and experience necessary to fulfill their vast potential.

The curriculum consists of basic science lectures (primarily given by medical students, residents, and physicians), faculty spotlight sessions, Problem Based Learning sessions, mentor/mentee sessions, and        visit to the anatomy lab.

On Tuesday, March 1st, Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School's Poetry Class taught by Mr. Sackman and the Poetry Club moderated by Mr. Frank visited St. Joseph's College Brooklyn Campus to see APCA’s (Association Of Promotional Campus Activities) 2014 Spoken Word Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year, Odd?Rod.  Odd?Rod considers himself more than a poet as the afternoon was filled with "picture-painting" poetry and an interactive storytelling style.  Students and faculty alike were engaged and enriched by both the rhythmic stylings and charming sincerity of this spoken word artist. Bishop Loughlin is once again grateful to SJC for their generosity and hospitality.  This indeed was an afternoon well spent!

Expectations High for Bishop Loughlin Lax

When the Bishop Loughlin H.S., Fort Greene, boys’ lacrosse program was founded in the spring of 2012, many of the student-athletes, especially the freshmen, were eager to try out the school’s newest sport.

Sure there were some growing pains along the way, but the players – despite finishing that first season 0-13 – stuck with the sport to the point where it became their passion.

Those same freshmen won six games sophomore year, and last year came within two goals of reaching the CHSAA ‘B’ division city championship game.

So if there was ever a natural progression from freshman to senior year, this group is ready to take the next step to hoist a championship trophy.

But just because it seems like the logical next step, it’s not just going to happen, and the Lions are well aware of what it will take to win a city title.

The team, made up of about 30 student-athletes, looks stronger than ever as the 2016 season gets underway. New head coach Patrick Young, whom the players affectionately call “Batman,” joins the fold, bringing plenty of competitive lacrosse experience.

Young played Division III lacrosse at Plymouth State University, N.H. He had coached youth lacrosse before, but this will be his first time coaching high schoolers.

Along with rival Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, Bishop Loughlin fields one of only two boys’ lacrosse teams among Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn. But even so, the sport of lacrosse is quickly gaining popularity in this area.

“You see it in the college game and in the professional leagues; it’s absolutely exploding,” Young said. “Any sport you can think of, there’s some aspect of that sport you can weave into lacrosse. I’d say it’s the perfect blend of basketball, hockey and soccer.”

Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School is celebrating its 165th anniversary as the first Diocesan high school in Brooklyn.

It also marks the end of the school’s “Three Schools, One Foundation Campaign,” which raised $12 million for various renovations to the Clinton Hill school.

At 700 students, primarily African American and Latino kids, it is one of the largest Catholic high schools in the borough.

Loughlin has a graduation rate of 99 percent, and 97 percent of its graduates go on to attend institutions like Babson College, Columbia University and NYU, among others.

Scoring is the Goal for Loughlin Soccer

A pride of lions is a family unit. The animals travel together, protect each other and share any prey.

While there isn’t exactly any hunting going on in Fort Greene, the Bishop Loughlin Lions boys’ soccer program has adopted this same family mentality.

The Lions recently began their first season in the local CHSAA soccer league. The team played last year in a developmental league to prepare for this fall.

It had been quite some time since Bishop Loughlin fielded a boys’ soccer team, and the program’s rebirth began last year under head coach Ranford Penny, who found out about the opening since his children attend the school.

Penny played college soccer at St. John’s University, Jamaica, 1995-99. He later played for several semi-pro teams before beginning his coaching career.

He spent 12 years as the head coach at Baruch College, Manhattan, before coaching for the Woodhaven Soccer Club. This extensive soccer background has benefitted the development of the young Lions players.
